Bent metal, exposed fasteners, or an outlet that dumps behind the gutter can defeat an otherwise sound installation.
Closed-cut valley
Shingles from one slope continue across the valley. Shingles from the adjoining slope cover them and are trimmed to a straight line near the center. The finished roof has no exposed metal channel. The cut line, overlap, shingle condition, and fastener locations all matter because water is moving directly beside the trimmed edge.
Woven valley
Shingle courses from both slopes alternate across the center, creating a woven pattern. This approach is not a universal choice for every laminated shingle or roof shape. Thick shingles can bridge, buckle, or sit unevenly in a tight valley. The installer should follow the written instructions for the exact shingle and roof configuration rather than choosing a method by habit.
A valley style is not a shortcut around preparation
Open, closed-cut, and woven valleys can only perform as well as the deck and drainage layer beneath them. Ask what will be installed below the visible finish and how the valley will terminate at the top and bottom.
Why Valleys Start Leaking
Fasteners are too close to the drainage path
A nail hole in the wrong place gives water a direct path through the finish. Fastener zones vary with the valley system and product instructions. A repair should locate the leak and inspect the fastening pattern instead of assuming more exposed sealant will solve it.

The valley is then rebuilt as a compatible system. That can include a new valley membrane, new metal where the selected design uses it, replacement shingles tied into sound courses, and corrected flashing at walls or penetrations. The bottom must release water cleanly into the gutter or beyond the eave without sending it behind trim.
Surface sealant may be part of a manufacturer-approved detail or a temporary measure, but a thick stripe over an unknown leak does not inspect the deck or restore the hidden layers. If several old patches already cover the valley, ask what will be removed before another material is added.
When a Focused Repair May Be Enough
A valley can often be repaired without replacing the whole roof when the trouble is isolated, matching shingles are serviceable, the deck damage is limited, and the surrounding field still has useful life. The repair still needs enough access to rebuild the failed section correctly.
